"The Causes of the Accident at Chornobyl"

Mr. Anastas is a Health Physicist and President of the Health Physics Society. He was the Safety/Radiation Safety Officer for a U.S. National Research Council Team that went to Chornobyl in 1992 to develop research projects with Ukrainian scientists. He has over 20 years of experience in engineering, radiation protection, industrial hygiene and safety with regulatory agencies, electric utilities and engineering consulting firms.
The accident at Chornobyl was caused by a number of shortcomings, including reactor design, operations and administration. Each of these shortcomings will be discussed as well as their influences on the outcome of the incident. The presentation will include a chronological sequence of the events leading up to the accident, the accident itself and its aftermath. A video of Team members entering the reactor area and burned out shell of the turbine hall will also be shown.
