KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manage and lead planning, evaluation, scheduling, budgeting, reporting, quality assurance, and technical oversight of in
vivo bioassay laboratory operations and support staff.
-
Conduct research into radiation effects in humans at low doses; utilize existing data to determine population effects in
vivo bioassay.
-
Manage the count room in obtaining alpha/beta/gamma data.
-
Interface with Department of Energy scientists and managers on issues involving whole body dosimetry.
-
Coordinate planning for the collection, temporary storage and final disposal of hazardous, industrial, radioactive, and
mixed waste with NMSU Environmental Health & Safety program.
-
Implement safety and waste management related procedures and other necessary documentation.
-
Responsible for onsite daily radiation safety.
-
Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of
radiation detection including general survey meters, alpha/gamma spectroscopy and liquid scintillation, general
count room methods, state and federal regulations related to radiation safety, industrial hygiene, laser safety,
hazardous communication, waste management and protection of the environment; health physics; in vivo radiobioassay,
general accounting, procurement and contracting; computer operations and standard software; laboratory safety practices.
Skill in project planning and management; negotiations and conflict resolution; written and verbal
communication; self-organization and project prioritization; problem identification and resolution, procedural and policy
development; database development and maintenance. Ability to plan, schedule, and coordinate safety and
waste management activities; respond efficiently to emergency situations; communicate effectively with co-workers and
CEMRC collaborators; analyze and interpret technical data; effectively monitor compliance with state and federal
safety/waste management rules and regulations.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Masters degree or Ph.D. in Health Physics, Industrial Hygiene, Public
Health, or related field and five (5) years related experience.

Development and modification of laboratory procedures to meet performance criteria of different research projects.

Data acquisition, analysis, and reduction using specialized instrumental software.

Operation, calibration, and routine maintenance of analytical instruments.

Preparation and maintenance of accurate laboratory records in accordance with CEMRC’s quality control/quality assurance plan.

Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of
analytical chemistry and radiochemistry techniques for analyses of various environmental media, quality control/quality
assurance procedures, GC, GC/MS, ICP-AES, ICP-MS, and IC is very desirable. Skill inoral and written
communication, data reduction and validation, and report preparation a plus. Ability to maintain communication
and relationships with coworkers and collaborators is crucial. Also requires the physical ability to stand for long periods
of time during a normal work day and ability to lift 50 pounds.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree (in hand by hire date) with a major in chemistry or
related science including a minimum of 12 hours of chemistry credit.
- Laboratory bench experience in analytical and radiochemistry techniques
and instrumentation.

Maintenance of database files associated with count room activities.
